The research group leader in the Perceiving Systems Department specializes in the development of computer-aided processes for the perception and digitisation of people and their activities in crowded scenes
Tübingen – Siyu Tang, a postdoctoral researcher in the Perceiving Systems Department at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) in Tübingen, joins ETH Zurich as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor for Computer Vision as of January 2020.
“This appointment is very important to me,” says Tang, “ETH Zurich is an amazing place to be and the professors in the Computer Science department are widely recognized as leaders in their fields. I’m very excited to join the faculty and I’m very much looking forward to working closely with them.”
Tang leads the Holistic Vision Group at the MPI-IS where she researches at the interface between numerical optimization and machine learning. She develops computer-aided processes for the perception and digitization of people and their activities in complex and natural environments – a challenging task, given the complexity of real-world scenes. For machines, up until this day, the visual understanding of people remains very challenging.
“In my work, I try to push the boundaries of the Computer Vision techniques available today for people detection, tracking and pose estimation in crowded street scenes, I develops novel methods at the interface between numerical optimization and machine learning, which help machines better understand the human form, movement and complex activity,” Tang explains.
Tang is a multiple award-winning scientist. She received an early career research grant to start her own research group at the MPI-IS in April 2018. A few months later, in October 2018, she received the DAGM MVTec 2018 Dissertation Award at the German Conference on Pattern Recognition (GCPR). Her thesis with the title “People Detection and Tracking in Crowded Scenes”, which she finished summa cum laude, was praised by the board and the technical committee of the DAGM (Deutsche Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Mustererkennung) to be outstanding.
Tang has been a member of the Perceiving Systems Department, lead by one of the world’s leading Computer Vision scientists Michael Black, since February 2017. She joined the MPI-IS after she finished her PhD at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics. Before that, Tang received her Master’s degree in Computer Science at RWTH Aachen University, and her Bachelor degree in Computer Science and Technology Department at Zhejiang University in China. During that time, she was a research intern at the National Institute of Informatics in Japan.
Next year, Siyu Tang will be an area chair for one of the world’s leading Computer Vision conferences, the CVPR 2020, and in 2023 she will be a tutorial chair for the CVPR taking place in Vancouver.
