Are you interested in data visualization or databases? Do you enjoy exploring new technologies? The Haptic Intelligence department of the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS) works on programmable touch technology, which is also known as haptics. From simple knobs to robotic arms with a dozen degrees of freedom, haptic technology enables people to touch and feel objects in virtual or remote environments. Recently, we have collaborated with the University of British Columbia in Canada to develop Haptipedia, an online visualized library of over 100 haptic devices (http://haptipedia.org/). The Haptipedia team is an interdisciplinary group of mechanical engineers, human-computer interaction designers, and visualization researchers who are interested in making haptic technology accessible to users around the world. We are looking for a motivated individual with interest in programming, data visualization, and databases to help develop additional visualization features and/or improve the data entry pipeline for Haptipedia.
We are looking for Student assistant (m/f/d).
Volume of employment: max. 83 hours a month
Starting as soon as possible
In this research context, we are looking for talented students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Science (3rd or 4th year) or Master of Science degree in computer science (Informatik), engineering cybernetics (Technische Kybernetik), or electrical engineering (Elektrotechnik) to support our research as student assistants (HiWi) or interns. Possible tasks include:
- Assistance with creating new visualizations and functionality for Haptipedia
- Improving Haptipedia’s data entry pipeline and database
- Improve usability of the Haptipedia interface based on results of our ongoing user studies
This hourly paid student assistant position will allow the student to gain hands-on experience with data visualization and databases as well as be exposed to ongoing human-computer interaction and haptics research. The concrete position and tasks are subject to discussion with interested candidates. Selected candidates can start working as soon as they are hired.

- be enrolled as a student in a German university
- be familiar with database concepts
- have strong academic performance in relevant bachelor’s and/ or master’s courses
- be interested in working in an international and interdisciplinary research group
- have good oral and written communication skills in English
The following skills are considered as a bonus:
- familiarity or experience with data visualization libraries such as D3.js
- familiarity with human-computer interaction and user experiments
- good oral, and written communication skills in German
